Bed Bug Identification in South Carolina, North Carolina, & Georgia

As their name implies, bed bugs are pests that are commonly found in your bed. They are experts at hitching rides from place to place, easily infesting any home. They commonly end up in luggage or on clothing allowing them to travel from hotels or other households to your home. Once bed bugs have infested your home they can be extremely difficult to get rid of which makes knowing what they look like the first step in preventing them.

What do Bed Bugs Look Like?

Luckily there is only one type of bed bug that will invade your home. A bed bug will have the following traits:

  • Size: ¼ inch long
  • Color:  Translucent yellowish when young to red-brown when mature.
  • Shape: Flat oval-shaped body before feeding and round, elongated body after feeding.
  • Legs: 6 legs
  • Antenna: 2 antennae

Bed bugs are commonly found in the seams and box springs of a bed but will also infest furniture, curtains, and even the walls if the infestation is severe enough. Their bite is similar to that of a flea but bed bug bites can be all over your body whereas flea bites are generally on the legs and ankles. They are often confused with other insects like ticks and fleas which can make them difficult to treat.

Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation

It is important to catch a bed bug infestation as quickly as possible since it can multiply rapidly. Some common signs of a bed bug infestation include:

  • Small itchy bites on your body
  • Finding molted skins
  • Brownish-black fecal marks on sheets
  • Blood stains on sheets
  • Seeing bed bugs
