Cockroaches vary in size, color, markings, and preferred habitat, so identifying the species can help determine where they may be coming from and which treatment approach is appropriate.

Several cockroach species are commonly found in and around homes and businesses throughout the Southeast, including American, German, Oriental, brown-banded, Australian, and smokybrown cockroaches.

How to Identify a Cockroach

Although appearance varies by species, cockroaches generally share several recognizable characteristics:

• Body shape: Flat, oval-shaped bodies that allow them to hide in narrow cracks and crevices.
• Legs: Six long legs built for rapid movement.
• Antennae: Long antennae that may extend beyond the length of the body.
• Color: Depending on the species, cockroaches may range from light tan to reddish-brown or nearly black.
• Wings: Many adult cockroach species have wings, although not all commonly fly.

Cockroaches often hide in dark, protected areas near food, warmth, or moisture. Depending on the species, activity may occur behind appliances, beneath sinks, inside cabinets, around plumbing, in crawl spaces, or near exterior entry points.

Common Cockroach Species in the Southeast

• German Cockroach: Small and light brown or tan with two dark parallel stripes behind the head. German cockroaches live primarily indoors and are commonly found in kitchens, bathrooms, cabinets, and appliances.
• American Cockroach: One of the largest common cockroach species, typically reddish-brown with a lighter marking behind the head. They prefer warm, damp areas and may enter buildings from outdoors, drains, crawl spaces, or utility areas.
• Oriental Cockroach: Dark brown to nearly black and commonly associated with cool, damp areas such as basements, crawl spaces, drains, and areas with excess moisture.
• Brown-Banded Cockroach: A smaller species with lighter bands across the wings or abdomen. Unlike many cockroaches, they may be found in warmer, drier areas such as furniture, shelving, bedrooms, and electronics.
• Smokybrown Cockroach: A large, uniformly dark brown cockroach frequently found outdoors around trees, mulch, gutters, and landscaping but capable of entering structures.
• Australian Cockroach: Similar in size and appearance to the American cockroach but typically has distinctive lighter markings along the wings and behind the head.

Signs of a Cockroach Infestation

Because cockroaches often hide during the day, you may notice evidence of activity before seeing the insects themselves.

Common signs include:

• Droppings: Small dark droppings that may resemble black pepper or coffee grounds.
• Egg Cases: Cockroach egg cases, called oothecae, may be found in cabinets, cracks, furniture, or other protected areas.
• Shed Skins: Cockroaches shed their outer covering as they develop.
• Dark Smear Marks: Marks may appear along walls, floors, or other surfaces in areas with moisture and heavy activity.
• Musty Odor: Larger infestations may produce a noticeable unpleasant odor.
• Live Cockroaches: Repeated sightings, especially during the daytime, can indicate significant activity nearby.
