Rolling back a mattress to check for bed bugs

A bed bug infestation can be frustrating for anyone to deal with. They quickly spread from room to room and can leave bites all over your body. Many people may try at-home solutions that are sold in stores to get rid of bed bugs but these products can be ineffective at completely eliminating an infestation or cause the bed bugs to retreat and infect other areas of your home costing you time and money. The cost of bed bug treatment can vary depending on a variety of factors like the size of the infestation, how many areas of the house the bed bugs have infested and what type of treatment is needed.

Bed Bug Treatment

Depending on the type and severity of your infestation an exterminator might use a few different methods, either by themselves or in conjunction with other treatments to eliminate bed bugs. Often these treatments need to be reapplied multiple times to ensure bed bugs are completely removed from your home. The most common ways to treat bed bugs are:

  • Heat treatments:  Bed bugs cannot live in temperatures exceeding 120º F. When using a heat treatment to treat bed bugs an exterminator will use special heaters to heat the room to 135º-145º F, effectively killing any bed bugs and their eggs.
  • Steam Treatments: Steam treatments, like heat treatments, use heat as a way to kill bed bugs. Steam is sprayed in all areas where bed bugs live. Using steam not only kills bed bugs on contact, it also drives bugs out from their hiding places.
  • Fumigation: Fumigation can be extremely effective for large bed bug infestations. Fumigation involves completely covering and sealing your home and deploying an aerosolized insecticide that will permeate through all areas of the house.
  • Insecticide: Using an insecticide is the most common way to treat bed bugs. Your exterminator will apply the insecticide to areas where bed bugs have infested, killing bed bugs and interrupting their life cycle.
